Wet T-Shirt Contest, Sat. June 16 (JRS)

This evening, we celebrated three birthdays: Katie (cargo), Bruce (mechanic), and Andy (Winter Manager).  There was quite a bit of build-up because it was a surprise for all three.  So, between the preparation, the groups of people responsible for distracting the three birthday-ees, and the group who had been asked to perform a wet T-shirt contest, there was a lot going on.

The theme was a day at the beach, and people had been working on decorations all week.  I had no idea how much work had gone into it, but after an hour of decorating by about 10 people, the dining room lounge had been impressively transformed.  The only thing that was missing was sand, which we’re running short on here.  There were colorful streamers hanging from the rafters, tissue-paper decorations everywhere, an inflatable palm tree, two “home-made” palm trees courtesy of Laura (facility engineer), a 30-foot-long poster decoration along the wall, and a big-screen projection of a surfing documentary add the final touch.

Katie and Bruce had been pre-occupied by “coctail hour” with some of their closer friends.  Andy had miraculously won more than a dozen strait pool games in order to keep him busy.  Katie arrived first and then Bruce.  Andy took quite a bit longer because he had a power plant watch.  We weren’t sure how to make sure he came by the dining room, so Lynette made up a story about someone insisting on smoking at the dining room bar.  Poor Andy, he must have been dreading facing the situation.  He eventually showed up (after about 45 minutes), and the party was offically started.  Everyone was having a great time, and it was a nice “escape” from the daily grind down here.  The cake was brought out and we all sang happy birthday.

The main event was the wet T-shirt contest.  Leah (kitchen materials person) had asked several guys to do the contest.  In the end, we had 5 guys: Sven “The Viking” (Ice Cube), Brian (carpenter), Travis (carpenter), Brien (cargo), and myself (I guess Leah couldn’t resist including me and my manly physique).  Leah explained to the birthday folks that there was a contest, then she started the show off, giving the illusion that it would be girls.  But, much to Bruce and Andy’s dismay, Sven came charging out doing his Viking pilaging act.  He was followed by Brian, Travis, and Brien.  Meanwhile, I was waiting in the dish pit (where we were all hosed down) for my turn.  Kari (materials) came back and told me, “You’d better work it, they’re killing out there!”

So, at that point, it was on!  I strutted out of the kitchen with my clipboard, pen, and safety glasses.  I threw the clipboard and pen, tossed off my glasses, then pulled off my polo shirt, to reveal my sexy, sexy wet t-shirt.  I then busted out my hottest stripper moves for the judges.  You can not touch this!

Amazingly enough, even after that disturbing display, Lynette was still wanting to hang out with me, and we were able to get a cute picture together (Courtesy of Robert Schwarz).

The night was a good time, and who knows, perhaps it spawned a new career for me.  I just don’t know if it would be stripping or stand-up comedy!
