ARO Movie night – Friday, Nov. 24th (LAS)

Friday, November 24th was a work day for us here on the ice, but Thanksgiving back in the states.  We managed to snag a phone during lunch hour to make some very short calls home to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.  The rest of the workday was “as usual”.  The end of the day, however, was especially nice.  Friday night was great given the knowledge that Saturday was a day off for us (We normally work 6 days a week/9 hour days minimum).  We went to ARO’s first Movie night of the 2006-2007 season to watch the Princess Bride.

The NOAA guys (Andrew and Emrys) host Friday night movie night.  They collect a cooler full of the world’s cleanest snow and we enjoy “slushies” – a frosty bev of choice on ice.  I actually just kept eating the snow/ice – it was so soft and fluffy.  It was great!  Jason (knowing that he was on call for Saturday night for emergency response) decided to go for amaretto.  When the movie was over, we made some “clean air” and “clean water” vials.  It wasn’t until I was ready to leave that I realized how much amaretto Jason consumed.  He wasn’t in an “ugly” state.  He was, however, in what I now call “Bobblehead” state.  This means that although he agrees that he is ready to go, you actually have to get up, get dressed and head out the door and wait for him to mimic your actions.  I kept looking back to make sure that he was out the door and following me.  It was a funny sight.  He was in his full ECWs (kind of-I’ll explain that later) and staggering towards me along the path.  His head just bobbled – independent of the heavy boot stagger along the path.  It was like he couldn’t stop it.  I stopped and waited for him to catch up as I realized how ugly his stagger was.  When he caught up to me, I noticed that his gator was on crooked and half his face was exposed.  I lovingly tucked the gator up under his goggles and lead him around to the A4 pod entrance.  We watched some sledders make their way down the huge hill that had been built up behind the station and yelled to Nick and Emrys (movie night go-ers).  I also took advantage of the opportunity to win my first South Pole snow fight (you can’t really make “balls” with this stuff).  Jason didn’t really have a chance.  I would feel guilty, but…it was funny…
