Crusin’ Chile, Feb. 25-28, 2008 (JRS)
Something we got from our trusty Lonely Planet, South America on a Shoestring, was information about a budget (well, sort of budget) cruise from Puerto Montt, in the middle of Chile, to Puerto Natales, in Southern Chile. The three day cruise took us through a nice network of fijordlands with impressive views that just got more impressive as we made our way south.
Here’s a pic of our boat and us on the last day of the cruise:
All in all we had a pretty good time on the cruise. It was above our budget (about $440 per person for a four-person berth), but we decided to do it anyway because it had gotten good reviews and it took us where we needed to be. The weather was so-so, but for the most part it afforded us good views of the surrounding mountians. As we headed south, the mountians got closer and closer and bigger and bigger. The final day was the best with magnificant mountians and narrow passages as we wound our way down to our final destination.
Here’s a picture of our accomodations in Puerto Montt, a bit shady, but the bed was nice.
Here’s the view of the volcanos on the way out of Puerto Montt:
An eerie view of a shipwreck from long ago (the story goes that the captian was trying to get away with an insurance scam, but when they didn’t find any sugar in the shallow water below, he was foiled)
