South Pole Hero Shots
Here are some pictures of us at both the ceremonial and the geographical (as of Jan. 1, 2006). The ceremonial pole is the candy-stripped pole with a big mirror globe on top. It also has a ring of flags around it, representing all of the countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty. It is set up as a picture opportunity. The geographical pole has a gold and silver design on top of it (it's a model of the new station, where we're living), and it sits behind the big sign with info about Amundsen and Scott (the first two expiditions to the South Pole in 1911-12). The ice shifts by about 10 meters a year, so the geographical pole location is updated once per year on New Years.
